Description

I had been using an old version of Allbest and just got some new memory cards so I decided to upgrade.

Camera:
Canon A650 IS

Memory cards:
1 x SanDisk; Ultra II; Class 4; 2 GB card (card that had Allbest and worked wonderfully)

4 x SanDisk; MicroSD HC; Class 2; 4GB card with SanDisk SD adapter

I used CardTricks 1.4.4.0 on each card to format and make bootable. The 4 GB cards received a notification stating "Your card needs to be FAT formatted with (non-standard) 64 KB clusters, for maximum compatibility try using a smaller (max. 2 GB) card."

I installed CHDK 0.9.9-864 (a650-100d-0.9.9-864-full.zip), downloaded from http://mighty-hoernsche.de/ [^]

After using my cards throughout the weekend I attempted to dump them to my computer, but received transfer errors ("Error copying file: Skip Retry Abort") on many of the files from all of the different cards, both still pics and videos. When I clicked Retry (sometimes I'd need to do click it two or three times) the file would copy, but it would be corrupt.

I tried dumping the cards on three separate computers: Dell Mini 10v with Windows 7 Starter 32-bit, HP dv4-1548dx with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and Dell E1705 with Windows XP sp3. I tried to plug the cards into the SD reader directly (worse results, more transfer errors), and using the camera as the reader via USB to the computers(fewer transfer errors, but the files themselves were still damaged).

The pics seemed to view fine, but the videos would not load in Windows Media Player, and would generate the following error in VLC:

"AVI Index
This AVI file is broken. Seeking will not work correctly. Do you want to try and fix it? This might take a long time." Yes No

When I choose "No" the files load and play but suffer errors throughout and I cannot use the playback slider. Some files only play for a couple of seconds (when they should play longer), others play almost to the end.

When I choose "Yes" it re-indexes the file (I can skip around using the slider), but the file is still corrupted so the playback fails at some fixed point (wherever that particular files data goes bad)

The files range in size from just a couple of seconds (under 10 MB) to minutes (200+ MB).

I have tried a number of different pieces of software (DivFix, AVIMedic, VLC, etc.) to repair them, but no luck. AVIMedic clearly showed that the files and indexes were both damaged.

I wiped one of the 4 GB cards and used it with the standard camera firmware, everything worked fine. I then re-installed CHDK and got the errors and corrupted video.

I then disabled CHDK (using the lock on the the card) and shot some video. Worked fine. Re-enabled CHDK and received errors.
